Material
Gondola forcola walnut Cannaregio, Venice
Offcut walnut from a remèr’s workshop — the craftsmen who carve the oarlock every gondolier leans on. Six visits to Venice before I finally thought to ask.
The story
I had wanted a legitimate wood from Venice and being an island trees are not that common. This walnut was given to me by a local craftsman and is from an old gondola that had been used for many years in the lagoon of Venice.
On the lathe
A lovely wood to turn and takes a friction polish very well. It’s a hard wood so should give many years of use.

Build the spec, and I’ll quote it
Pick the pen, the fittings, the plating and the material — including your own timber if you’ve got something with meaning to it. Takes about two minutes, and there’s no obligation at the end of it.
