Arden Pen Co / Materials / Camelthorn
Material
Camelthorn Damaraland, Namibia
Where the whole thing started, by accident. A carpenter, a grain I’d never seen, and a table that was never fitting in the suitcase. Pens did.
The story
I met this carpenter in Namibia working on a wooden table. After chatting for a few minutes I was given a small piece of camel thorn off-cut which came home with me. Some time later I made two pens for friends who were with me on the same trip. This is how I realised pen made from a wood with meaning meant more than anything else.
On the lathe
It turns very well although needs fine sanding down to 800 grit and it’s treated with friction polish.

Build the spec, and I’ll quote it
Pick the pen, the fittings, the plating and the material — including your own timber if you’ve got something with meaning to it. Takes about two minutes, and there’s no obligation at the end of it.
